Connecting historic locations with today’s audiences

Historic Royal Palaces’ (HRP) mission is clear: help people experience history where it actually happened. Across six iconic palaces, they needed a digital visitor guide that could bring hidden history to life, encourage exploration, and work seamlessly onsite.

The challenge

The experience had to enhance the visit, not distract from it. It needed to work reliably across vast, historic sites, guide people naturally, and unlock stories linked to specific rooms and artefacts. All while respecting conservation rules and supporting a wide, multilingual audience.

Our response

We worked closely with HRP’s digital and on-site teams to design multilingual digital visitor guides for the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace.

The app combines intuitive tours, maps, rich media and wayfinding with AR storytelling. Proximity beacons trigger location-based content, while a flexible CMS lets teams update stories easily.

The impact

We created digital visitor guides that changed how people explore the palaces. Visitors can unlock stories as they move through each space, using rich media, location-aware content and AR. Used daily by international audiences, the guides deepened engagement and played a key role in increasing overall visitor satisfaction and Net Promoter Score.
